There are three types of a dental abscess:
- Gingival – infection of gum tissue
- Periodontal – infection in supporting bone tissue
- Periapical – infection of the soft pulp inside a tooth.
An abscess is accompanied by any of these symptoms: redness, inflammation, pain, pus, difficulty swallowing, bad breath, lessened the sense of taste, fever, sensitivity to hot and cold, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
To prevent an oral abscess tooth, practice regular oral hygiene:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day (do NOT use fluoride toothpaste, as it is a neurotoxin)
- Use an antimicrobial mouthwash every morning after brushing your teeth – some recipes are below and here
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months; use only soft bristles to avoid gum damage
- Do not use tobacco
- Avoid excessive gum chewing (do NOT chew gum with aspartame or sucralose—they cause serious illness; opt for gum sweetened with organic xylitol)
- Avoid junk and fast food
- Avoid caffeine when suffering from tooth pain or infection.
If an abscess develops, don’t wait but begin to treat it immediately. Some solutions follow.
Natural remedies for toxic tooth infection
Black tea bag
The tea is packed with antioxidants; when applied to an abscess, it absorbs toxins and pus.
Soak a black tea bag in warm water, squeeze out excess, and apply the bag to the abscess. Keep it in your mouth for several hours or overnight, then rinse with salt water to get rid of the bacteria.
Soothing and anti-inflammatory, this herb has been shown to reduce gum swelling and bleeding, effective in killing Streptococcus bacteria strains.
- Option 1: drink 3-4 cups of chamomile tea a day, briefly holding the tea in your mouth before swallowing.
- Option 2: soak a chamomile tea bag in warm water, squeeze out excess, then hold against the affected area for 30 minutes or more.
- Option 3: using the herb without the bag, mash the chamomile with a little water to make a poultice and apply to the abscess several times a day.
Antibiotic and antihistamine supporting the immune system, reduces inflammation and pain.
Whether loose or in a tea bag, mix 1-ounce echinacea with warm water and steep for at least 5 minutes. Remove the bag or strain the liquid and rinse your mouth 2-3 times a day with the tea.
Contains allicin, an anti-inflammatory antibiotic, which will reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Peel 3-4 cloves of fresh garlic and crush them to release the juice. Apply to the abscess at least twice a day.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda
Used in many commercial toothpastes and mouthwashes, hydrogen peroxide kills germs. Baking soda increases alkalinity in the mouth—bacteria hate that. Reduction in infection means less swelling and pain.
- Option 1: mix 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide with 1 tablespoon of warm water and rinse your mouth vigorously for 2 minutes, then spit out. Do this once or twice a day for 2 weeks.
- Option 2: mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Apply the paste directly onto the affected area and leave on for several minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Do this once or twice a day for 2 weeks.
Used for millennia in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling promotes oral health, including the regeneration of receding gum tissue. Coconut oil is antibacterial by virtue of its lauric acid. It has been shown effective in reducing dental plaque and treating gingivitis.
Twice a day on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning and right before bed is best), take 1 1/2 teaspoons of virgin coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for 10-20 minutes. Spit out and rinse your mouth with warm water. Continue until the abscess disappears—or don’t stop: oil pulling is a wise routine practice for oral health to prevent future abscesses from occurring.
Salt (sea salt and Himalayan rock salt are best) is a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. It alkalinizes the body and kills bacteria causing infection.
Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in 6 ounces of warm water until dissolved. Rinse your entire mouth, concentrating on the affected tooth and spit out. Repeat until all the water is used. Do this several times a day.
This spice is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antibacterial and a boon to oral health.
Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with enough warm water to make a thick paste. Apply to the affected tooth and allow to work for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. If you prefer, you can mix the turmeric with extra virgin olive or coconut oil.
