What is Water Retention:
Aggregation of extra fluids in the area between cells and in the circulatory system is the main reason for edema or commonly known as water retention. This condition causes swelling in the face, ankles, feet, legs and hands, and it can happen to everyone, especially to pregnant women. In order to prevent water retention, people must consume food rich in potassium.
Causes
The University of Maryland Medical Center conducted a research which discovered that the major factors for water retention are pregnancy, the body’s reaction of humid water, menopause and hormonal changes.

Here are all of the causes for this condition:
  • Antioxidants;
  • Inadequate intake of certain vitamins;
  • Smoking to dust;
  • Fast food
  • Liver disorder;
  • Food allergies;
  • Hypothyroidism;
  • Nutritional deficiencies;
  • Poor kidney functionality;
  • Minerals;
  • Food allergies
  • Lack of protein;
The aging process prevents our stomach to produce acid as it needs which is why we can’t process food properly. As a result of that, the big amount of undigested food can cause damage to our stomach and digestion tract, thus bringing on disturbance and irritation to the intestine wall. The intestine wall actually becomes thinner and brakes which is why undigested food is allowed to get in touch with blood. Due to all of this, the immune system sends anti-infection agents which can cause allergy symptoms like water retention. In order to prevent this in the first place, you should eliminate dairy and eggs from your diet because they are the major factors for this condition.
How to get rid of water retention:
-Water
People make a huge mistake when they decide to drink less water because it leads to dehydration and as a result of that the body holds its liquids, same with fat. To prevent that, make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the whole day.
-Salt
The consumption of salty foods like fries which contain a lot of sodium can lead to water retention because our body only needs 2-2.5 gr. of sodium per day. You should avoid salty foods and instead try to consume more fresh vegetables garlic and ginger.

-Sweat

The sodium ions are mixing with water in our body which is why our sweat is salty. You have a healthy body if you are sweating a lot and you should drink a lot of water during the day to stay well hydrated.
-Fiber
Fiber is also very cleansing because it cleanses the intestines and removes additional fluids. Make sure to consume more veggies and fruits because they are high in fiber which will help you get rid of water holding and cancer as well.
-Fish
As you already know, fish is abundant in healthy omega-3 fatty acids which are extremely important for our organism, so try to consume as much as you can.
-Melons
The consumption of melons and citrus will help you reduce the water retention since they are high in potassium which is balancing sodium levels.
-Grains and nuts
The best solution when you feel buffer are grains since they contain vitamin B6 which will provide a relief in PMS. Moreover, grains also have fiber, while nuts have healthy fats.
-Diuretics
The major role of the kidneys is to filter the water, potassium and sodium in order to make urine. During this process, small amount of both sodium and potassium is returned into the blood in order to keep levels balanced. Diuretics are the best solution since they help in the production of more urine, help in water retention, high blood regulation, treat liver and heart diseases as well. On the other hand, if they are taken for a longer period of time, they can lead to dehydration and cause harm to the kidneys. As a result of that, there is an imbalance of potassium, sodium and electrolyte levels which can cause serious health conditions.
List of foods with diuretic properties:
  • Tea rich in caffeine and coffee
  • Onions
  • Celery
  • Watermelon
  • Hawthorn
  • Corn silk
You should definitely consume a diet which consists of 80% of fruits, veggies, soy, grains and fish, and 15 % of any other food.
What you should avoid?
Reduce salt intake in order to prevent water retention by eliminating packaged and processed food from your diet.
