Grade School Student Brings Brother To School To Avoid Skipping Class

– A determined grade school student brings his younger brother to school just so he will not skip class
– The student’s mother died due to ectopic pregnancy which left the boy taking care of his younger brother
– Teacher Shyla Blasico shared the photos of the brothers on her Facebook account, asking help from netizens
At a very young age, Mateo Baño, a grade 3 pupil from J. Blanco Elementary School in South Cotabato was left with a huge responsibility of taking care of his younger brother after his mother died.

In a Facebook post, Shyla Blasico, a teacher from the school Mateo attends, posted photos of the 9-year-old boy with his younger brother sitting on his lap while he was in class.

Shyla wrote in the caption:

“Isa to sa mga pupil namin. His mother [passed] away last year due to ectopic pregnancy. Dhil walang mag-aalaga sa kapatid niya dinadala niya nalang ito sa klase para di maka absent.”
“Ang tatay naman ay naghahanap buhay kaya hinahayaan nalng namin. Pinapakain nalng namin sila sa [school] pag lunch time para di nalang umuwi tuwing tanghali. Hopefully may mga mabubuting puso dyan na tutulong.”
In a report by ABS-CBN, Blasico said that Mateo has one elder and younger brother and that he and his “kuya” takes turn in taking care of their “bunso”.

She added:

“Tatlo silang magkakapatid, puro lalaki. Yung isa Grade 5.”
“Hindi naman makulit ang bata, nakaupo lang. Kung matutulog may divan kami, doon pinahiga ang bata. Lahat po sila pinapakain namin. May feeding program kasi every lunch sponsored by DepEd (Department of Education).”
The teacher said that she has been receiving calls from people who want to help the boy. However, she insisted that it would be better if people can give food, clothes, and school supplies for the kids rather than money, explaining that those are the most important needs of the family.
